PTA Blocks Nearly 100 Million Mobile Phones During FY 2024–25

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) blocked approximately 100 million mobile devices across the country during the fiscal year 2024–25, according to its annual report.

The blocked devices included 868,000 lost or stolen handsets, 72 million counterfeit or fake devices, and 27 million mobile phones with duplicate or cloned IMEI numbers.

In its report, the PTA stated that it has played a transformative role in strengthening the mobile device management ecosystem through the implementation of the Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS). The system has significantly curtailed the import and use of counterfeit and substandard mobile phones across Pakistan.

As a result of DIRBS, consumer protection has improved, the mobile phone market has become more documented, and substantial revenue has been generated for the national exchequer.

The PTA further revealed that since 2019, more than Rs 83 billion has been deposited into the national treasury through the registration of mobile phones under the individual category.

The authority reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a secure, transparent, and consumer-friendly telecom environment in Pakistan.
