Binance Hit by $6.3 Billion Hack in Biggest Crypto Theft on Record

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has suffered a massive cyberattack in which hackers stole an estimated $6.3 billion worth of digital assets, making it potentially the largest crypto theft on record.

The breach occurred on October 29, with reports suggesting that most of the stolen funds were transferred within just 20 minutes. Investigators believe the attackers gained access to Binance’s internal systems and exploited its transaction approval process to move cryptocurrency from company-controlled wallets into unauthorised accounts.

Blockchain analytics firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis have linked the incident with high confidence to TraderTraitor, a hacking group associated with North Korea. However, the investigation is still under way, and the perpetrators have not been officially identified.

In response to the attack, Binance temporarily suspended withdrawals and pledged to cover the financial losses. The exchange has also assured users that their funds remain safe and said it has sufficient company resources to compensate for the stolen assets.

Binance, working with its partners, has reportedly managed to freeze around $3 billion worth of the affected cryptocurrency. Efforts are continuing to track and recover the remaining funds.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the security of cryptocurrency exchanges, particularly the systems used to approve transactions and protect large volumes of digital assets. The scale of the breach has also renewed scrutiny of cybersecurity measures across the crypto industry, highlighting the risks faced by even the world’s largest trading platforms.
