Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the establishment of a Google Chromebook manufacturing factory in the province, marking a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to expand technology access in public education and strengthen Punjab’s digital infrastructure.
The approval came during a meeting with a high-level delegation from Google for Education and Tech Valley on Monday. The delegation was led by Kevin Kalis, Global Director of Google for Education, accompanied by Umar Farooq, CEO of Tech Valley. The officials briefed the Chief Minister on Google’s ongoing programs in Punjab and its plan to introduce advanced software into Chromebooks to enhance student learning. These devices will include an Artificial Intelligence Toolkit and Google’s latest AI model, Gemini, to support digital education and creativity. They will also feature Read Along for English language development and Canva to help students build design and creative skills.
The delegation noted that Google for Education has already trained more than 2,000 teachers in Punjab’s public-school system under its digital literacy program, and further training is planned to ensure widespread adoption of modern learning tools. They praised Maryam Nawaz’s visionary leadership and commended her strong focus on empowering students—particularly girls—through IT and innovative learning platforms.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz reaffirmed her government’s commitment to modernizing the education system, stating that transforming Punjab into an Artificial Intelligence hub is a central priority of her administration. She said that integrating IT into basic education is essential for preparing students to compete globally and that the establishment of a Chromebook factory would significantly contribute to this goal by strengthening the province’s digital ecosystem and creating new opportunities for youth.
She assured the delegation of full support and cooperation from the Punjab government and appreciated Google for Education’s continued collaboration in promoting digital learning across the province.
