Smart Classrooms to Transform Girls’ Education in Gilgit-Baltistan

The Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), is set to launch smart classrooms in 40 girls’ schools across Gilgit-Baltistan.

According to an official statement, the project aims to enhance the quality of education in the region and provide a more engaging learning experience for students.In the first phase, the districts of Nagar, Ghizer, Shigar, Diamer, and Kharmang have been selected for implementation.

“This initiative is part of the government’s efforts to promote education and digital literacy, particularly among girls in remote areas,” the statement added.By introducing smart classrooms, students will gain access to digital resources, interactive learning tools, and a more immersive educational environment.

“The project has the potential to revolutionize education in Gilgit-Baltistan and empower young girls to actively participate in the digital economy.”Additionally, the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has approved the PC-1 to establish a Daanish School in Sultanabad, Gilgit, and Shigar district of Baltistan, with a budget of approximately Rs6 billion.

According to officials, the initiative aims to provide high-quality education to the youth of Gilgit-Baltistan, equipping them for a brighter future.

Federal Secretary of Education Mohyuddin Wani presented the project, emphasizing its significance for the region’s youth. The deputy chairman of the CDWP acknowledged Mr. Wani’s advocacy and commended his dedication to the people of the mountainous region.

As per the statement, the project is expected to commence in the second week of March 2025.Certain parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, such as the Diamer division and upper Kohistan, continue to lag behind in girls’ access to education compared to the rest of the region. Girls’ schools in Diamer district have even been torched multiple times in the past, highlighting the urgent need for such initiatives.
